The last time actor and activist Jerry Levy graced these shores he had sell out shows across the country. He returns to perform Howard Zinn’s “Marx in Soho” as well as Wallace Shawn’s “The Fever”. 

Together these plays illustrate the humanity, care and frailty that lie at the heart of struggles in solidarity for justice and equality. His one person performance are simply brilliant as Jerry brings to life the nuances and contradictions in both Zinn and Shawn complimentary pieces.

Come see them yourself and you’ll be talking for ages. And often the case Jerry himself is happy to rejoin the audience to break the barriers between performers and consumers. 

Jerry Levy
While not teaching or touring or writing, Jerry Levy is involved in other productions as both Actor and Director. He also has taught sociology at Marlboro College since 1975.  In conjunction with his performances Jerry Levy gives lectures, leads discussions and conducts workshops relating the themes of the plays to current events, education, art, culture and society.

Marx in Soho (Howard Zinn)

Howard Zinn’s “Marx in Soho” portrays the return of Marx. Embedded in some secular afterlife where intellectuals, artists, and radicals are sent, Marx is given permission by the administrative committee to return to Soho, London, to have his say. But through a bureaucratic mix–up, he winds up in SOHO in New York. From there the audience is given a rare glimpse of a Marx seldom talked about; Marx the man. The play offers an entertaining and thorough introduction to a person who knows little about Marx’s life, while also offering valuable insight to students of his ideas.
Marx alone occupies the stage. “Marx has different voices. The actor has to show Marx’s outrage at social injustice, express the pedantic Marx, the vindictive Marx, Marx, the loving family man, Marx as humorist, and a Marx that can laugh at his enemies”

The Fever (Wallace Shawn)

While traveling in a poor country, a sensitive, well educated, arts loving and consumption-driven man or woman of any age discovers that his/her life-affirming existence is related to the often brutal suffering of others. In the bathroom of a hotel our “anti-hero” feverishly defends and relentlessly attacks his own way of life. Inner voices and imagined characters fuel his fever as he narrates and often attempts to enact his story.

Photographic Exhibition - “A Decade Of Resistance: Images of Struggle 2002 – 2012” at Dublin Anarchist Bookfair this weekend

Organisers of the Dublin Anarchist Bookfair have announced that the Bookfair, to be held this Saturday (26^th May) in Liberty Hall, will include a major Photographic Exhibition entitled “ A Decade Of Resistance: Images of Struggle 2002 – 2012”. The exhibition will feature photographs by activists and photographers Andrew Flood, William Hederman, Aileen O’Carroll and Paul Reynolds and, according to organisers “documents an array of anti-capitalist, anti-war, pro-choice, environmental and other protests, starting with a mass trespass at Shannon Airport in October 2002 and ending with a Reclaim The Streets in Dublin in April 2012.”
“In the context of street protest, official history has often relied on images captured by photographers positioned behind police lines, or in some way mediating events from the perspective of authority. By contrast, the photographs in this exhibition record resistance from the viewpoint of the resister,” said one of the photographers, Andrew Flood
The Dublin Anarchist Bookfair will also feature a number of film showings including;

• Bernadette: notes on a political journey – a remarkable documentary, made over a nine year period, which charts the story of Bernadette Devlin McAliskey’s political journey since her explosive entry into the public arena in the late sixties.  This showing will be followed by a Q&A session with director Lelia Doolan
• Eyewitness Afghanistan–  an outline of the current political situation in Afghanistanas told through interviews Farah Mokhtareizadeh conducted with Afghan politicians, artists, religious leaders, community organizers, journalists and activists between December 2010 and February 2012.
•  The Viking Way– a documentary about Iceland’s 4 –year journey from economic disaster to signs of recovery

and a large number of meetings, debates and discussions.
Over 20 anarchist organisations, libertarian bookservices and community campaigns will host bookstalls and information stalls at the event.

7th Dublin Anarchist Bookfair 2012 - May 26th Liberty Hall

The 7th Anarchist Bookfair will take place in Dublin the weekend of 26th May 2012 at Liberty Hall, Eden Quay. We have a full schedule of meetings planned and a varied range of book stalls from a host of anarchist and radical publishers and organisations. Doors open at 10am and the first meetings start at 11:30 so forgo the weekend lie-in, grab a coffee and come on down!

Eyewitness Afghanistan - the current political situation in Afghanistan as told through interviews conducted with Afghan politicians, artists, religious leaders, community organizers, journalists and activists; a Forum on Radical and Underground Publishing; Racism in the Recession with a speaker from the Traveller community; The Sue Richardson panel: My Life in Struggle, Women Speak - a forum on women in activism; Is it kicking off in Ireland? – discussion on the Irish response to austerity; a talk on Dublin’s Other History hosted by the authors of the popular blog Come Here to Me, a GP speaks on the Right to Choose, a debate on the fiscal treaty referendum as well as introductions to anarchism and the WSM.

The Bookfair will also host a showing of “Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey” with a Q&A session with director Leila Doolan and  “The Viking Way”, a documentary about how Iceland responded to the crisis. 

Bookstalls carrying an array of radical literature will be set up for the day. Among the organisations from home and abroad will be: PM Press, AK Press, WSM, RAG (Revolutionary Anarcha-Feminist Group), Manchester Anarchist Federation, Solidarity Books, Look Left magazine, Organise and Just Books, Oxfam, the Irish Labour History Society, Corporate Watch and Freedom Press. 

Several campaign groups will be present with information stalls including: IPSC (Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign), Choice Ireland, Shell to Sea, LASC (Latin America Solidarity Centre), FEE (Free Education for Everyone), AFA (Anti Fascist Action) and the Campaign against Household and Water Taxes.

75th Anniversary of the bombing in Gernika

 
 Tomorrow, Friday 27th of May - Solidarity books will bave a stall at the Gernika commemoration in the Teachers club, 36 Parnell square.

Belfast Anarchist Bookfair to take place Saturday 28th

  The 4^thBelfast Anarchist Bookfair will take this Saturday at 12pm in the Warzone centre, Little Victoria Street in the city centre. Hosted by Organise!/Just Books Collective there will be also a WSM stall including the latest Workers Solidarity and Irish Anarchist Review.
There will also be two talks/discussions taking place.  The first at 12.30pm on radical co-operatives, collectives and ‘free space’ will be lead off by a panel of people involved in a range of co-operatives, occupations and collectives.
The second talk, at 2pm, on a woman’s right to choose.  Entrance is free and a range of stalls present including the Independent Workers Union, Anarchist Federation and Anarchist Studies Network offering  a wide range on new and second hand books on Irish politics and history, labour history, feminism, socialism, anarchism, gender, fiction etc.
The events of the day will be followed by a social/gig in the centre from 7pm with Runnin’ Riot and That Bastard Chapman.

Anarchists - who we are and what we are up to - public meeting in Dublin

 

A Workers Solidarity Movement public meeting for everyone interested in finding out more about anarchism. Speakers will give an audio visual introduction to the history of anarchism before going on to looks at its relevance in Ireland today and detailing the various struggles that anarchists in Ireland are currently involved in. There will be time after the presentation for for your questions and discussion.

Solidarity Books "Women in Struggle" Month starts this Thursday! (Cork)

Our "Women in Struggle" Month kicks off this Thursday with a film based upon the Scottish anarchist Ethel McDonald.

"Ethel McDonald: An Anarchist's Story (2006)" Produced and Directed by Mark Littlewood "This drama-documentary tells the story of Ethel MacDonald. A forgotten legend, her story ranks alongside the courage of 'La Pasionaria' and the legendary 'Odette'. Whilst both these women sustained world-wide recognition, our Scots heroine dwindled into obscurity and remains forgotten to this day. Ethel MacDonald's own intimate recollections are presented through a definitive mix of documentary and drama, re-visiting the Killing Fields that were the Spanish Civil War.

Supporting commentary spoken by David Hayman paired with expert interviews, including Noam Chomsky, provides background knowledge of 1930's European Politics and a further insight into the young Scot's motives, actions and social situation. The film links her own personal drama to specific archive footage of Barcelona in disarray - an image Ethel MacDonald came to know so well. "

Copies of the book based upon the research for the screenplay "An Anarchist's Story: The Life of Ethel MacDonald" by Chris Dolan, will be available in solidaritybooks.

The following week, Solidarity Books Celebrates the 101st International Women’s Day!

A large turnout is anticipated at the Solidarity Books celebration of the 101st International Women’s Day, on Thursday 8th March.
The series of events will commence from 6pm,

Some of the events taking place during the day are:

6pm Community Dinner at Solidarity Books with food by Veg Out! and Lentil Disorder

7.30pm Discussion with women from Vita Cortex and others on the experiences of women workers.

8.30pm Film Showing: The Women of Brukman (2009)

A powerful documentary which tells the story of the Women ( and a few men ! ) who occupied and operated the Brukman clothing factory when the owners deserted it during the financial crisis in Argentina of 2001. The film follows the lives of several women over a life changing 5
year period as they transform their factory and working life and inspire others to do the same.

Second Solidarity Books stall at Semora Spraoi

Come along to the second Solidarity Books radical bookstall selling books of interest to anarchists, other socialists & republicans once a month in Seomra Spraoi. The stock is a mixture of radical books imported into Ireland for the stall and remaindered titles spotted by our keen eyed buyer and so available at very low cost. If you doing an event and want a bookstall at it let us know.

The stall will be open Feb 29 from 18.30, there is a vegan cafe night in Seomra every Wednesday night so you can also get a tasty cheap meal on the night from around 7.30.
